Maya Creating a Custom Car Paint Shader tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to create a car paint shader that works with the Maya Software Renderer (and Mental Ray) and is fully customizable with Fresnel reflections, multi layered paintwork, and metal flakes. It will be by no means as scientifically accurate as the mi_car_paint_phen, but should serve most purposes, whether you are doing studio type renders or exterior renders.

For the Metal Flakes (optional):
1 Blinn Shader
1 Granite or any other procedural texture that uses randomized patterns

1 Set Range Node

1. Preparing meat and vegetables: First things first
All of the setup work will be done in the Hypershade, so go ahead and open it up (Window->Rendering Editors->Hypershade). The entire shader network will be composed in three different layers and added together in a Layered Shader. e real estate in the Hypershade, you can close the top taps (Tabs->Show Bottom Tabs only). Make sure that your Attribute Editor is open (press CTRL+A) and your Create Bar is visible in the Hypershade (press button “toggle the create bar”).

2. Stuffing the Chicken: Diffuse color
Create a Phong Shader, set the Specular Color to black and the reflectivity very low to something like 0.08. value (Why not use a lambert you might ask? because a phong renders faster). Real car paint is of course highly reflective, but the reflections will be driven through a different layer later on. For the base color you will use a ramp in order to represent the changing color of the car surface. Click on the checker map icon right next to the Color value in the attribute editor and from the “Create Render Node” window choose a ramp (under 2d textures, leave texture placement at normal). You can choose any color you like for your car paint, but you should aim for a smooth color variation from light to dark top down. The goal is to emulate the mi_car_paint_phen’s base color and edge color where the center of the ramp is the base color and the bottom of the ramp is a darker shade of the same color (in the Mental Ray shader the edge color is set to black by default, which I personally find too dark). In the following example I have chosen a yellow-orange shade with two anchors for the base color in order to push the color graduation to the edges of the ramp.
