What is a Research Study?

Research  is defined as “the systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge” [CITI course at the University of Miami] 

In clinical studies involving medication, the new drugs are first tested in animals and test tubes and determined safe for humans. Then human volunteers try the new drug before the FDA will approve it for the public so that the risks and benefits of the treatments are understood. These volunteers are monitored throughout the clinical trial and may withdraw at any time during the study.
