What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin disease caused by multiple factors that include plugging of hair follicles, excess oil(sebum), bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes), and inflammation.

  1. Who gets acne?
    Most people get acne at some time in their lives. 

  2. What areas of the body get acne? 
    Acne usually occurs in areas of the body that have oil glands such as the face, chest and back.

  3.  What worsens acne? 
    Acne can worsen with over-cleansing, abrasive scrubs, picking and squeezing acne spots, cosmetics, hair sprays, sweating, hats or clothing, and some medications (i.e. steroids). 

  4. What treatments are used for acne? 
    Treatment depends on the severity of the acne. Topical therapy consists of benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, and antibiotics.  Oral therapy consists of antibiotics, birth control pills, and isotretinoin.  A combination of topical and oral therapy can be used.
